<image:caption>Derwent Water and the surrounding fells contain some of the finest scenery in England and this panorama captures it all. Although the weather on this trip was good for walking, it was awful for photography - high wispy white clouds and weak, hazy, blue skies gave a light that lacked character, clarity and interest.

This view was captured on the last morning when conditions dramatically changed, promising much for the week ahead. Sadly, I had to return home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>England's highest single fall. Strangely the only access to these falls is through the local pub, The Green Dragon in the hamlet of Hardraw - a small charge is levied. When in spate Hardraw Force is pretty impressive but on this occasion a more gentle character is revealed. Vertical panoramic images are often difficult to achieve but this fall lends itself to that format perfectly.

The contrast between the water and the dark rock, the hint of autumn leaves and the spread of the fallen water gives impact and interest throughout the image.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At 886 metres, Pen y Fan is the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons. After a cold and early start I had reached the summit of Cribyn for sunrise, but disappointingly a cloud bank prevented this. Fortunately, for it was bitingly cold, the cloud slowly moved to allow the early morning sun to reveal this terrific view of the north east face of Pen y Fan.

The real advantage of early starts is the quality of the light around dawn. An added bonus is that for the few hours I was on the mountain I saw nobody - I could feast in isolation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If I were asked which of my images gave me the greatest sense of pleasure it would be this black and white image. It is not my most popular picture but for me it excites a very deep sense of joy. Taken some time ago in the Quantock Hills, I just love the misty conditions, the pronounced grain and textural depth achieved. Its sometimes difficult to explain ones emotional feelings but perhaps that mystery is part of the pleasure. A large print of this hangs in our sitting room and continues to give much enjoyment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is an area of wild and unique landscape. A frustrating morning began waiting for a fickle sun to cast enough light to emphasise the strong autumn colours in the foreground, the remnants of the Caledonian pine forest in the centre and Liathach, one of the Torridonian giants, beyond.
I was rewarded after several hours with this lovely, gentle view of the Scottish landscape. Persistence and patience really do pay dividends.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was a great day in the mountains. After a dawn shot of Tryfan from the lower slopes of the Carneddau, a walk down to the frozen shores of Llyn Ogwen for this classic view of Y Garn and the Devil's Kitchen.

The cold, the stillness, the partly frozen lake and the hint of high cirrus combine to create this stunning image. Not long after this shot two low flying jets destroyed the peace - it was time to leave.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Probably better known as the stream that flows under Ashness Bridge, a honey pot for photographers with its fine views over Derwent Water to Skiddaw. It's also on the way to Watendlath hamlet, a lovelly spot hidden away from the main tourist stream.

Few people explore further but as this shot proves it's well worth it. The canopy cast enough shadow to allow a slow shutter speed and heavy rain had swollen the beck - a bold statement against the deep spring green.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another of those shots that benefit from a long wait. Nothing much was happening and the outlook unpromising - it would have been easy to pack up and leave. There was a certain lightness in the west and, just before the sun set, this wonderful light emerged and transformed the clouds and mountainside, creating this terrific moody image.

Evidence again that patience is an essential prerequisite for successful landscape photography.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Set in a magnificent location at the meeting of Loch Alsh, Loch Duich and Loch Long there are few really good images of this classic Scottish castle - this though is a cracker. I`d been trying for 20 years to capture a good one and the chances this day were not looking good, bleak, bitter with leaden skies.

However high tide with little wind meant good reflections and momentarily enough sun filtered through to brighten the castle and mountains beyond. Seconds later the sun was lost for the day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A classic landmark and one of Brunels masterpieces. I have made many trips to capture this scene but the elements were never quite right. I always arrive around sunrise and on this occasion it was high tide. It was a cold Autumn morning and a mist hung over the river, perfect. Well it would have been had it not been for a survey vessel which had decided this was the perfect time to start work on this stretch of the river, I was fuming !

After what seemed an eternity it moved upstream and the water gradually became still again. The light was still lovely but the mist had disappointingly gone. Just as the water returned to calm and reflections were perfect the vessel returned - snap - just in the right place below the bridge, brilliant, frustration averted. When on location we never quite know what to expect - be prepared - take advantage - always wait, just in case, it would have been so easy to have left early but patience paid off.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Back on my favourite beach - each time I return I feel it has been too long since my last visit. It is a special place, layers of interest unfold here and there is always new things to discover and explore. Alfred Wainwright coined the phrase "best ridge mile in the Lakes" when describing the Crinkle Crags and Bow Fell, I`m happy to call Marloes "the best beach mile in Britain". The best time for me is a fine, very early morning with a lowish tide and the beach all to myself - time to wander - special.

This shot compliments the sunset image of Marloes, but also check out Tidal Rock on the textures page, a hint of the interesting variety of rock types found here. Go and explore.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What a cracking view. The lower slopes of Lingmoor Fell to the left with Pike of Stickle, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark dominating the centre. Dungeon Ghyll can even be seen on its way down from Stickle Tarn.

Great Langdale in the central fells is one of the most popular areas in the Lakes and rightly so for its combination of rugged mountains, fine walking and terrific scenery. This shot is one of those rare occasions when all the elements of a successful image come together almost immediately. I had noticed the potential here, set up the tripod and camera and within minutes sun had flooded the foreground with light and at the same time enough had filtered through to give that wonderful dappled effect high on the Pikes.

I have often waited hours when nothing happens and photography becomes a frustrating business, but moments like these really do happen.</image:caption>

Time to research new areas so off to the Sherwood Forest, now found I will return, it's wonderful, full of potential. This avenue is a photographers delight. The apparaent brightness suggests gentle sunlight - wrong, it was another deeply grey day with a hint of drizzle but the bright leaf colour and Velvia film really do the business.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although not a Munroe, Scottish mountain over 3000 feet, Suilven is one of the most distinctive Scottish mountains as it stands alone in an ancient and remote wilderness. For me this view looking north from Stac Pollaidh is simply one of the finest the British Isles has to offer.

Many times I have climbed Stac Pollaidh, often in poor weather and usually before sunrise, hoping for good light, knowing great views await me. On this trip I was privileged to watch sunrise two mornings running from high up on Stac Pollaidh and could marvel as this unique landscape emerged from the shadows - awesome. It seems almost untouched by man, it's as if the Ice Age glaciers have just retreated scrapping the land clean and leaving a few mountains to stand in isolation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Light transforms landscapes and there's no better example than this shot taken in the Somerset countryside near Bath. The Lavender farm is not far from me so I was able to visit on several Summer evenings when the lavender was in full bloom.

On this day there had been several Summer storms but the sun finally emerged from dark clouds to provide dramatic lighting not long before sunset. This terrific light contrasts so well against the retreating storm clouds, the green of the trees, the lavender colours and the warmth of the stone wall - photographers just love this light - its simply stunning. If you are in the area this Summer the farm is well worth a visit, it's a wonderful location, there's a lovely tea room and there's always a warm welcome - check it out at www.somersetlavender.com</image:caption>

I'd been on Whernside, Yorkshire's highest mountain, all afternoon and stayed up for evening and sunset shots towards Ingleborough, a very distinctive mountain across the River Doe Valley.

Photography can be a frustrating business in the Lakes, as this particular morning proved. Some light but never enough and always in the wrong place and some clouds but usually too many and again in the wrong areas.

Finally, later than I would really have liked, a balance was struck. The resulting image manages to capture the drama and scale of the landscape that had been evolving in front of me for the past few hours.</image:caption>

With such an iconic location that is so much photographed and so well known, it is never easy to produce an original interpretation, but doesn`t this work well. Our persistence was rewarded just before sunset as the clouds opened and the sun cast this terrific light over the panorama in front of us. The solitary farmhouse and stormy seas complete a pretty impressive scene.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This gem of a bay is nestled between some pretty impressive cliff scenery, Stackpole Head to the north and St. Govan`s Head to the south. North of Stackpole Head lies Barafundle Bay, another gem but I think Broad Haven South has a more gentle and open feel to it, and just look at those colours in the sand.

Taken not long after sunrise the calm of early morning creates a gentle atmosphere. I had taken a number of images and packed up but then noticed a series of rippled waves that appeared, apparently from nowhere, adding a special touch. From where I know not, certainly no ships passed by - was there a minor earth tremor? Wherever it came from it was a stroke of very good fortune.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of a series of black and white pictures taken during a hard winter some time ago. It is quite simply, lovely - its beautiful. It combines my passion for trees and a visual simplicity that is not always easy to achieve - being in black and white there is no colour to distract.

Its one of my most successful images and looks great as a fine art print, especially when displayed in a simple dark frame.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With so many imposed restrictions, Stonehenge is not an easy area to photograph with the same freedoms I enjoy elsewhere. What are English Heritage afraid of ? This is a site of international importance, it belongs to us all.

It is another location I had visited many times but this sunset was special. It is one of the few images that is filtered, it has an 81B slight warm up filter which emphasises the rich colours and makes the silhouette of the Stone Circle really stand out.</image:caption>

Atlantic depressions dominate the weather at this time of year so I was fortunate to enjoy this wonderful day sandwiched between some truly dreadful ones. It resulted in many successful images on empty beaches from dawn till dusk. Later on in the day whilst researching locations, hidden in the dunes of Luskentyre, I was privileged to watch as a sea otter emerged from the sea and played on the empty beach below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Taken in the woods on the northern slopes of Bath. These days it is not often we can wander in woodland softened by deep snow, well certainly not here in Bath, so what an opportunity we were given this winter. The snow lay deep and crisp and even and creates an almost monochrome image - there is a hint of colour in the beech trunks and leaves. Sadly heavy snow followed so no more picture taking but it was great fun spending time walking the silent woods. This image manages to do exactly what the title says!!!</image:caption>

I have never seen this river in such full flood. The previous week saw heavy snow but then warmer temperatures and heavy rain combined with snow melt to cause this waterfall to almost overflow. Snowmelt also had the added benefit of the interesting patterns on Buachaille Etive Mor, the iconic mountain that dominates the entrance to Glencoe as seen from Rannoch Moor.</image:caption>

I had been driving for several hours and reached Buttermere with the promise of this lovely evening light. I parked, put my boots on, grabbed my camera gear and almost ran up the fellside to find a good vantage point. I was lucky to find this viewpoint and worked quickly, heart pumping, to capture this shot, bathed in this glorious light.
